Hawaii unemployment insurance is available to provide temporary assistance to workers that qualify and are unemployed through no fault of their own.States provide unemployment insurance to workers to help them meet their financial obligations and to keep the economy of the area as healthy as possible. The money used to provide benefits to workers is contributed by the employers and nothing is deducted from the employee’s wages. Hawaii Unemployment benefits are administered in Hawaii by the Unemployment Insurance Division of the State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. The benefits are determined by past employment and legal entitlement and are not paid on a basis of need.Workers that need to apply for Hawaii unemployment benefits are able to file a claim by using the Hawaii Tele-Claim telephone filing system. If workers are filing their claims within the State of Hawaii they can call 643-5555. If the worker is residing in any other state, Washington D.C., Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada they can call 1-877-215-5793 to file their claim. If the applicant is residing anywhere else they will be unable to complete the application since Hawaii has no reciprocal filing agreement with any other countries. The Hawaii Tele-claim lines are open Sunday through Thursday beginning at 6:30 a.m. and closing at midnight and on Fridays from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. unless Friday is a state holiday. When an applicant initiates a call to the Hawaii Tele-Claim system they should be have some specific information available.Applicants that are applying for Hawaii unemployment benefits will be expected to provide their social security number if they are a United States Citizen. If they are not a citizen, applicants will have to provide their alien registration number to continue the application. All applicants will be expected to provide the name, address and phone numbers for all employers for the last 18 months. The dates of employment, including the last day worked and the reason for separation must also be provided. If released from military service within the last 18 months, form DD-214-Member 4 will be required. Applicants that worked for the Federal government within the last 18 months will need Standard Form 8, Standard 50 or pay stubs.Claims should be filed immediately after separation from the employer since credit will not be given for past week.If a worker is unable to apply for Hawaii unemployment benefits over the phone for some reason, they can complete the claim in person by visiting one of the local offices. The state maintains a website that applicants find very useful to determine what is needed to complete a claim and workers are encouraged to use the information provided to file their claims immediately after a job loss.
